Midnight: A Gangster Love Story by Sister Souljah

Sister Souljah returns with her latest novel, Midnight: A Gangster Love Story. In her bestselling novel, The Coldest Winter Ever, we were introduced to the handsome and mysterious character, Midnight, with whom Winter Santiago has an infatuation with. After being raised in a very wealthy and influential Islamic and Sudanese family, Midnight enjoys a life of comfort, confidence and protection provided for by his father. After his father’s empire comes under attack, he is sent to the United States along with his pregnant mother Umma. It is in the streets of Brooklyn where Midnight uses his intelligence and Islamic values to provide, protect and fight for the ones he loves. He quickly finds ways to build a business to reclaim his wealth and status while at the same time remaining true to himself and his beliefs. In this highly anticipated follow-up we learn more about this fearless young man as he comes into manhood while navigating through drugs, violence and young women who literally throw themselves at him.

If you are looking for a sequel to The Coldest Winter Ever, then you will be disappointed. This novel is more of a prequel to its predecessor. Despite this disappointment, it was interesting reading about Midnight’s values and beliefs and how they differ from a lot of young black men his age. However, it a little unimaginable that he was so mature for his age seeing as he never ages past fourteen. His views of black Americans are disheartening as it seems as if Sister Souljah uses rhetoric that is contradicting and demeaning to her own race. I did not understand where the “Gangster Love Story” part comes in and the ending left me baffled and dissatisfied. There are also a lot of unanswered questions and the plot gets somewhat boring and predictable in some parts. This is not a page-turner like The Coldest Winter Ever, but it is an interesting and challenging read. Hopefully, there is already another novel in the works that will give Sister Souljah a chance to redeem herself and continue the saga of Midnight and Winter Santiago.
